HIREC: High (water) Repellent Coating
About HIREC
HIREC is a water repellent coating material (similar to paint) developed by NTT to protect
its telecommunications equipment from snow, ice, and rain interference.
The coating creates a contact angle of 150 degrees between the surface
and the water droplet, virtually eliminating the problems of rain fade
and rain, snow, and ice attenuation. This technology has been developed
into several products that can be used in a variety of ways, and we are
working on creating more. You can
download a pdf case study here.
HIREC 100, designed for outdoor use, contains a small amount of titanium dioxide. This acts as a photocatalyst, providing antifouling properties which keep the surface clean. A coat will therefore last for around three years.
HIREC 1100, is a spray-on coating, which can be used for the touchup on HIREC 100 coated surface.
HIREC 450, is designed for indoor use. Unlike most hydrophobic coatings which require two coats (an adhesive coat and a repellent one), requires only one coating of repellent.
HIREC 1450NF, is a spray-on coating, which can be used for small areas by itself or touchup on HIREC 450.
